In examining the various opinions of man as to what comprises the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and the results produced by those men and ministries promoting their own distinctive (false) brands of such, it has become rather obvious that 'any' departure from the Gospel allows for the production of spiritually self-destructive cults. (To depart from sound doctrine to embrace some fanciful vision(s) constructed of verses pulled out of context and/or distorted to support said delusions amounts to contempt for the word of God which the Lord equates with rejecting Him.) Once those cults grow in influence the tendency is to grant unto them an air of legitimacy by reason of their pious outward appearances, longevity, and number of adherents. However in reality a lie or lies cannot become 'truth' or acquire respectability (outside man's own imagination that is) regardless of the numbers that have taken to worshipping such deviations.
To start I will define the Gospel and then reveal some common additions used to downgrade such according to the wicked imaginations of men. Before continuing I would like to point out that people can still come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through religious movements that have seriously departed from sound doctrine. The Laodicean church though corrupt still maintained that salvation was by way of Jesus Christ alone and so we can be sure that 'born again' true converts would have been added unto that church. That did not however excuse their aberrant ways and so 'soul winning' does not provide an allowance or excuse for tolerating any deviant amendments to God's Word. The Gospel (Good News) is the eternal salvation of man, through the risen Saviour, Jesus Christ, Who made such available by reason of the cross, whereby the Lord shed His blood to restore fellowship between God and man. Furthermore such, being cleansed from their sins to be thereby made 'holy', would be indwelt of the Spirit of God and become members of the Lord's spiritual kingdom. The true Gospel has an 'ETERNAL' quality because the atonement provides 'eternal salvation' and any doctrine that appends temporal considerations to such can only detract from that 'real' Gospel and devalue such to produce a man made distortion as a substitute. Many prominent faith healers from the recent past, many of whom subscribed to British-Israelism, (One form of white supremacy doctrine promoted by the secret societies.) introduced many aberrant teachings into the various mainstream evangelical church movements.
Here are a few examples of the recent new age additions that have been presumptuously embraced as mainstays allowing Satan to sow confusion among the assemblies of the saints and actually provide a venue for 'psychic' healers, reckless soothsayers, and assorted heretics to minister to God's people.
(1) Physical healing is in the atonement.
Did Jesus go to the cross in order that man could have such short term bodily healing or did He go to the cross to effect man's eternal salvation? The answer should be obvious yet many still insist that the Gospel is eternal salvation 'plus' some temporal benefit. The truth is that Jesus does provide physical healing today, but nevertheless such was not the reason that He went to the cross. In fact Jesus healed many before He went to the cross and that reveals that the atonement was not required in order for God to provide such blessings. By adding a temporal benefit unto God's eternal purpose regarding the cross of Christ is to wickedly devalue such in the interest of incorporating earthly (carnal) concerns. (Note some even add earthly prosperity to the Gospel while still others are appending delusional 'man-made kingdom of God' schemes unto such.)
(2) That speaking in tongues is proof that one is filled with the Holy Spirit.
(PS. I received the 'gift' of speaking in tongues when I was 'born again' and I therefore know that this blessing, which is spoken of in the New Testament, is still available from God and so I do not speak from the perspective of a cessationist as regards spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit.) Even though the disciples on the day of Pentecost did indeed receive this 'gift' the primary evidence of their being filled with the Holy Spirit was their boldness in preaching the Gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit and their soundness in doctrine and godly manner. This gift (tongues) however provides no definitive proof as regards the Holy Spirit's presence because it can be rather easily counterfeited and indeed many of Satan's false ministers are known to routinely speak in tongues. The extremist view concerning 'tongues', being proof positive of being filled with the Holy Spirit has served as a major diversion that downplays the importance of the aforementioned critical proofs (soundness in doctrine and godly manner) to thereby provide ample opportunity for bogus ministers to circulate in the churches and thereby promote many false doctrines while using tongues to help provide the illusion that they are filled with the Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit.
(3) Being slain in the spirit and being drunk in the spirit is part of the Lord's ministration to the saints.
One of the benefits of being filled with the Holy Spirit is self-control; but the effects above stand in distinct and opposing contradiction to such godly spiritual integrity. This mind numbing business, like hypnosis, stunts a person's ability to exercise discernment by impairing those critical faculties normally used to determine the soundness of the doctrine being preached. (No doubt considered a great blessing in some churches.) Induced emotional fervor as well can facilitate the suspension of normal discernment which provides an opportunity for dubious suggestions to be accepted as fact. The practice of throwing people into euphoric states by way of a touch to the forehead is actually an age old psychic technique used by shamans. These, drug mimicking, psychological effects, that produce a sense of elation and peacefulness, are satanic counterparts; a counterfeit of God's provision of being cleansed from sin and filled with the Holy Spirit; the former mind blowing catharsis being a sensual high that has nothing to do with Jesus Christ, godliness, or the truth. There is definitely no example to be found in Holy scripture that would allow for the use of such pagan mind altering practices by God's people. As for a 'godly' spiritual drunkenness; there is likewise no evidence from scripture to support this phenomenon. It was the unbelievers who falsely maintained that the apostles were drunk on the day of Pentecost, and that was not because those disciples were staggering about; but because those men who refused to respond to the Gospel made an absurd accusation when confronted with an obvious miracle from God Who translated so as to allow all those present to hear the Gospel in their own native language.
(4) A transferable anointing as being God's way of distributing spiritual gifts.
God's Word teaches us that every perfect (divine) gift comes directly from God above and therefore those 'true' gifts, being of heavenly origin, cannot bypass the Lord's sovereignty in order to be held subject to the will of man. In occult circles where infiltration by demons and the attendant psychic abilities are used to empower false teachers to spread their delusions this horizontal spreading of 'powers' is however well known. To allow demonic anointings to be passed off as being gifts from God, pagan 'impartation' concepts were applied in order to obscure the reality of what actually transpired when God's servants laid hands on others. In scripture where we find the practice of laying on of hands there is no concept of 'impartation' implied as if any divine blessing or gift could be produced by man so as to be passed on. What you do find in God's Word are men of God asking God's blessing upon others as they were instructed to do so by the Holy Spirit. Those genuine blessings in all cases, of necessity, would proceed from God above and NOT pass through the men themselves. That faulty perception wherein some regard the Holy Spirit as being transferable from man to man by way of 'laying on of hands' would portray Him (The Holy Spirit) as being some spiritual force that was somehow made subject to man when in reality the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead.
In addition only Jesus is able to baptize and empower His servants as regards the Holy Spirit. How is it that so many are running about, over hill and over dale, frantically looking for the Holy Spirit while nevertheless maintaining that they are born of God having received the Spirit of Jesus Christ? To be filled with the Holy Spirit one must first repent of holding to man's carnal ways to walk by faith in obedience to the Gospel. Faith is not a substitute for abiding in Christ.
(5) The need to be under a 'covering' (As if Jesus' covering is not regarded as all sufficient.) of some church or religious hierarchy.
This abomination proceeds from Rome who uses such to maintain a strict system of control over her priests. The practice of placing intermediaries between God and man is an anti-Christ practice designed to displace (when permitted) Jesus Christ as one's Lord and Saviour through replacing Him with some professed servant of God. Jesus went to the cross to restore man to God; so why would He thereafter install intermediaries between Himself and man? The truth is that there is only one mediator between man and God, Jesus Christ. To allow any man to take His place as your spiritual master is to accept 'another savior' who incidentally cannot save so much as a single soul; not even himself apart from his holding onto the one true mediator; Jesus Christ. In a healthy assembly only Jesus is to be regarded as Lord with the members thereof working together as equals seeking only that the Lord's will be done and that in all things love and peace would prevail to the good pleasure and glory of God.
(6) That women can expect to have God's blessing in ministry while ignoring the pattern He set forth in the New Testament.
In order for women to function with the Lord's blessing as productive members of the body of Christ there is first all the need to acknowledge that the Lord expects things to be done His way. In addition authority as regards matters of service unto the Lord rests upon His revealed will as recorded in His Word. Without a precedent from God's Word to appeal to in order to establish a basis for acting in any specific capacity as His representative there is no safe foundation from which to operate. While personal feelings, cultural influences, and pragmatic considerations are considered proper motives for behavior as regards those of the world; any appeal to such unreliable sources for direction concerning divine guidance betrays a spiritually immature nature that of itself would disqualify an individual from holding any position of trust within the body of Christ. God's Word reveals that women are to serve as facilitators to the ministry of the Gospel while acknowledging that the Lord has granted unto men the responsibility for teaching the assembly. If simple obedience to the revealed will of God concerning obvious matters for maintaining peace and order in the churches is set aside then the backward order that Satan first used, whereby Eve led Adam into rebellion against the Lord, will be falsely represented as being a matter of no real consequence. That said; It is the responsibility of men to see that the women are not hindered; but rather encouraged to emulate every godly example set forth in the word of God, in that they having received the same Spirit of grace, are Christ's ambassadors with full authority to take the Gospel to the lost. In like manner let the men grant that the women be not silenced outside the assembly; but rather given full permission and support when the Spirit of the Lord prevails upon them to warn those who are in peril, or have fallen, or are wandering out of the way.
The psychological warfare against the saints by Satan in his efforts to hinder the preaching of the Gospel also incorporates some very old lies that have resurfaced with a vengeance. One of the most common is the idea that logic and faith are mutually exclusive as if the faith that was once delivered unto the saints was somehow contrary to reason. But that concept cannot stand in that it is premised upon an illogical 'belief' namely; that believing God is contrary to reason. In truth it is only the morally depraved and illogical people of the world that choose not to believe God. God's Word in reality is the only sure source of true wisdom and reason and to maintain otherwise is to perish in spiritual darkness being bound up in satanic rebellion against one's own Creator. Besides there are actually no atheists to be found in Hell; they all became believers shortly after their arrival.
The Catholic priests during the Dark Ages were having some difficulty passing off their fables upon the people and so they resorted to vile and spurious threats of damnation in order to create fear and so coerce the people into defying their own reason to instead accept on faith whatever superstitious nonsense was being foisted upon them. (In that respect, not much has changed.)
Of interest the Freemasons believe that the mind is an impediment to being spiritual and that the mind itself must be bypassed or transcended in order for one to become enlightened. Curiously enough the Masons maintain that they are not religious even though an applicant must maintain a belief in the existence of a 'Supreme Power' in order to be accepted as one. They also believe that they will be welcomed into a 'Celestial Lodge' in the heavens when they die. They also blasphemously employ a mock resurrection ceremony whereby they maintain that they are therefore 'born again'. (But they nevertheless still want you to believe that they are not religious.) Their rather secretive and strange god that they call the 'Great Architect', obviously doesn't require or have much use for honesty.
In keeping with the Masonic occult philosophy of bypassing the mind to engage in some spiritual experience many churches now advocate such reckless behavior somehow thinking that God condones the setting aside of one's mind. This insanity is entirely consistent with Eastern mysticism, hypnotism and self-imposed trance states, but abdicating control over one's own soul is hardly God's ordained way to spirituality; that being the shaman's way of encouraging possession by demon spirits. It would appear that many are being misinformed as regards the necessary role that the mind plays in affording man the ability to discern the difference between truth and error and distinguish fact from fantasy. This mindless mysticism no doubt has contributed to the acceptance of many foolish practices in the churches under the misconception that various exhibitions involving bizarre behavior and spasmodic afflictions are somehow inspired or produced by the Holy Spirit. Many are now going to church seeking to be taken over by various spirits that people once went to church to be delivered from. My, my, how times have changed.
God's Word reveals that the 'carnal mind' (An 'unregenerated' mind.) is contrary to Him whereas many mystics actually believe that the 'mind' itself is evil and so attempt to escape from such only to be caught up in demonic illusions produced by seducing spirits. When a person comes to Jesus Christ, their soul, which includes their mind, is restored by God and inasmuch as they believe and accept the truth found in His Word (to obey such) their mind is thus transformed by the power and in accordance with God's Spirit. The believer's mind is to be regenerated according to the Word of God and certainly NOT abdicated in order to pursue after any demon induced state of euphoria. It's absolutely amazing to discover that those being enthralled by such mystical seduction will nevertheless maintain that they are filled with the Holy Spirit (the Spirit of Truth); while spurning sound doctrine to hold instead to cleverly fabricated fables.
The Quackery of Charismatic Patriarchs
If some minister insists that you must leave your mind (and perhaps your Bible) in the vestibule in order to enter into some toxic spiritual fog; that managed to overtake him, do yourself a real favor and put some distance between yourself and that deceiver. The mind of one who is 'born again' and following Jesus Christ is quickened by the Spirit of God according to the truth of the Gospel, and is part of the restored soul of man and as such is to be employed in service to God and not something to be set aside to facilitate the entering into of any altered state of consciousness. This is part of the strong delusion that is overtaking the wicked; (prior to the man of sin's debut) those who refuse to believe, accept, and obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In the darkness lurks a delusional demon generated cosmic (false) Christ consciousness whereby those living in wickedness imagine themselves to be divine. Satan of course also advertises these new age delusions using a Christian label (IE. New Wine) to try and pass them off as some kind of 'new directive', 'special revelation' or 'Holy Spirit empowering' from God.
